I saw Soviet tank radio stations from the 50s. The general idea is very similar, cast aluminum housings with compartments for electronic parts. Apparently, the USSR took a lot of technology from Germany.

We had a BC-610 at Ohio State Univ radio club W8LT when I was there in early 1960s. We drove it with a Johnson VFO-122. Along with a 75A-4 made a fine QSK rig. Drove a double extended Zepp running from the top of the OSU stadium to the power plant chimney; 100' of open wire feed just touched the. ground. World paid attention when that rig was keyed!! Routinely worked KC4 on 40M. Wally K8BYT actually chased down all the parasitics in that rig! Bill Hale K8JIX. now K0QA

I have only seen very short footage demonstrated by the German Army with out accompanying radio set. I should say as used by infantry formations.

I have a Fu.H.E.u and I belive this is a ...u1. Mine has the lugs for antenna and ground in the top, right corner, but it doesn't have a lug for direction finding. As far as the layout and color mine resembles the Fu.E.H.v more that the ...u1- which I believe is what's being shown here. Mine has 9 RV2P800 pentode tubes (8 VALVO and 1 TELEFUNKEN).It also has a 1000khz CARL ZEISS crystal. My great uncle brought it back from the ETO at the end of WW2. He and my Grandfather (a RM Tech in the Navy during WW2) got it to work in the '50s and my G'father kinda held on to it. My G'father always said this was a good bit more advanced than comparable allied equipment. He said the capabilities were the same, but the miniaturization and rugged nature of the build were the compelling features. According to him a comparable allied unit would need an extra module just for the tubes. He was very impressed with how the RV2P800s were designed with the base flipped around to the top and the anode secured within the unit at the bottom of the tube I haven't made any attempts to get it running. However I do plan on assembling a decent electronics lab in my garage (w/ pwr supplies, scopes, meters, etc.) and at that point feeding some volts here and there in and within the unit.

@LA6NCA Thanks Helge! I first came upon your collection online back in '07 or '08, then I found you on YT! Your collection is phenomenal! I've looked at everything you've got and all of it is wonderful, I really like the pack radios, but the Lichtsprechgerät 80 is by far and away my favorite. To my knowledge, the Allies didn't have anything comparable to it. Considering the Germans operated on the steppe's of Russia and in the Western Desert it makes total sense! To this day, I'm blown away by the German's sense of industrial design and their ability to miniaturize and compartmentalize their designs. That aluminum alloy they used is decades ahead of it's time. I assume you know about Dieter Beikirch's collection. That dive bomber computer is brilliant! I work in industrial automation/automated sortation and the use of closed loop/feedback systems found in that computer are as impressive and vital today as they were in the late '30's. Keep up the good work!

Nice video. Equipment looks great, it is very difficult to find German WWII radio equipment in this nice of a condition. In terms of capabilities (RF power, modes and frequency range) the radio seems almost equal to the WWII Allied SRC694/BC-1306 radio, with the exception of the TRF receiver (the BC-1306 uses a more modern superheterodyne receiver). Thanks for the demo, great job!

A good idea for a short story, where the radio enthusiast speaks into the old panzer radio. Distant in the static an etherial voice answers '"Heavy fighting. Surrounded by enemy. We are low on ammunition, captain Hortl is dead." As though the combat patrol from 1944 are lost forever, trapped in the void, wandering through the black smoke of the eternal combat zone.

Over a period of about 25 years, I worked long range (several thousand miles), medium range (out to 3000 miles), short range (under 3000 miles) and mobile direction finding. Long range DF could locate a target within a 10 nautical mile radius, medium range (I forget maximum radius) down to a 1500 meter radius, and short range, down to a 50 meter radius. Even with short range DF, it was usually necessary to use mobile DF equipment (vehicle mounted) to locate a transmitter antenna if it was not easily visible. Sometimes it was necessary to use hand held DF equipment to locate hidden antennas.
